Just going to nerd out for a minute.
The reason AI upscaling is so good at noise removal is that it **is** noise removal 😛
The way AI upscaling works is that first the image is blown up using traditional (bad but fast) upscaling, which makes a blurry and/or blocky larger image. Then a bunch of random noise/static is added to it. Then the actual AI step is just a denoise model. That's how AI upscaling "invents" details that are only implied by the original picture, because some of the random static that's added is "correct", and the rest (and artifacts of the basic upscaling) are denoised away.
This is why using AI "upscaling" on something but leaving the size the same will still clean it up a whole bunch 😃
